The End Is Near! Its the truth, all good things must come to an end & thats why we want to invite you to help us end the year & most likely the world with our last exhibit and local artist spectacular at the ON!D space.Waitaminute! Last exhibit you say? At the ON!D space you say?
Here’s the skinny, our building has recently changed hands (inevitable changes come with that) and with all of our own personal endeavors / day jobs we have decided to take this opportunity to take a break from the brick and mortar space to develop some ON!D collective work we have placed on the back burner. OhNo!Doom LLC will still exist, in fact we have great plans for 2013.Whats in the works? Well for one NEXT SATURDAY, we will have a local artist’s last hurrah on December 15th. This will be an all day and evening cash & carry event with some special offers as well! We will be open through January so be sure to stop in for your piece of the Doom! 1800 N. Milwaukee Ave, Chicago!Through 2013 (and beyond) the online gallery will still be up and running with awesome goods, we will be working on some OND collective works and personal exhibits. There is also the possibility of pop up shops around the city and some street festival appearances in our future so keep up with our adventures through our website, newsletters and social media sites. Notably you should expect some new ON!D product this spring and Lana will be curating a Plush exhibition at Clutter Magazine Gallery in April! We want to personally thank all of the artists we have been lucky enough to represent, work with and know. We would not have been able to do it without you guys! Also thank you everyone that has passed through the OhNo!Doom doors over it’s 6 years as a physical space, visited us online or friended us in one way or another. We enjoy forging relationships with artists and our community and are excited to keep it up for years to come. If you can, stop in and say hello / see you later this December!

This weekend is a busy one with 3 gallery shows opening at around the same time, there is a lot to look at and even more that had to get done.

One of those shows is none other than the Custom Brutherford’s Ice Scream Man show at Clutter Gallery in Beacon, NY! Opening reception on Saturday, November 10th at 6PM until 9PM

My contribution was more of an enlarging and a re-imagining of the plush variety. Skulls and Ice cream, my favorite!

Septenary Artist Profile: Melita Curphy (Miss Monster)

Melita A.K.A Miss Monster is one of OhNo!Doom’s local staples. Another hard working, super funny kick-ass lady, who is always very open to talk shop. She is also a jack of all trades; creating magnificently sculpted one of a kind pieces, paintings, apparel, dolls, accessories, perfectly cast masks, costumes and handmade house hold products (like this “life-sized” demon rug and demon slayer costume):

Her dolls are sought after globally and are all one of a kind creations! All are original sculpts that are hand painted and adorned with carved beads, cast claws, crystals and other surprises. Each doll is also completely hand sewn and sits comfortably on any shelf or couch. Be sure to keep an eye on her website, you will always find something new and amazing! http://www.missmonster.com

All pieces for Septenary are available for viewing and purchase through the OhNo!Doom online gallery: http://shop.ohnodoom.com/collections/septenary

More about Miss Monster:

“I currently live in Chicago, though south Texas is my original home. My work varies from gouache and acrylic paintings, to cast plastic, plush, sculpey, leather and wood to the variety of materials used for my costumes, dolls and sculpture.

I attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago ’96-2000 after graduating from the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts in California. I taught illustration techniques for (almost) four semesters at a community college in Texas, leaving to work on the animated film A Scanner Darklyin Austin. Moving back to Chicago, I worked as a graphic designer at Motorola while doing freelance work on the side. Hey guess who’s totally not cut out for corporate office life?

March 2008 was the start of full time self employment and making that move was the best thing I ever did. Things have been going strong since thanks to many supportive, wonderful people who actually pay me to make monsters for them.

The majority of my time is spent running my online store out of my studio basement. I design all the items there and make most of them by hand. It’s a crazy way to make a living but it’s way better than a “real job”’

As Septenary winds down we are winding up for our next Adventure… Aug 11 2012

ON!D pays tribute to Pendleton Ward’s Adventure Time! on Cartoon Network

Septenary Artist Profile: Jake Waldron

Jake is a sculpting master, there, we said it. The detail to his work is astounding. All the sculpts are original, the eyes cast and hand painted in several stages, the hair all hand punched, the clothes are hand sewn and the skin made eerily real. Who knows, they might even walk around the gallery at night when no one is looking.

Check out a few of Jake’s Work in progress shots to get a taste of how these creatures come to life. If you can, come visit them in person before the show ends! Show comes down August 9th.

All pieces for Septenary are available for viewing and purchase through the OhNo!Doom online gallery: http://shop.ohnodoom.com/collections/septenary

I was born in 1986. Grew up in Connecticut and ended up going to college in Boston in 2004. I started school as a photography major and ended up jumping around to things like circuit bending, electronics, and computer programming. I would do something for a few months then decide to move on to something new. Finally in late summer 2007 I started sculpting and have been doing it since. Other than that, I am a pretty boring person. http://jakewaldron.com/

Septenary Artist Profile: Melissa Sue Stanley

Local artist, kick-ass lady and fellow stout enthusiast, Melissa Sue Stanley can be found at OhNo!Doom on a regular basis and may have even poured you a beer once or twice. She has recently been replanted back in Chicago after a whirlwind watercolor tour of…basically the world, and has broken her hiatus of large scale soft sculptures to bring you one fiendish sprite (and a handful of Baba Yaga’s finest chicken shacks).

The creation of Queen Mab has been well documented and shows all the details that go into Melissa’s soft sculptures. Queen Mab can also rise from her chariot and stand separately if desired.

Pieces for Septenary are available for viewing and purchase through the OhNo!Doom online gallery: http://shop.ohnodoom.com/collections/septenary

And as a special treat…here is a sneak peek at Melissa’s in-progress piece for our next show Adventure Time: A Tribute Show

More images and watercolors can be viewed on her tumblr on a regular basis: http://melissasueart.tumblr.com/

Melissa Sue Stanley is an artist using a wide variety of media to create a wide variety of work.  At the moment she’s focusing on watercolor paintings, graphite drawings, and sewn or crocheted soft-sculpture.  Her sculptures and stitched monsters are collected internationally and have shown in galleries around the United States. In 2012 she began work on a large series of narrative watercolor portraits. She enjoys making things, expensive beer, and bluegrass -preferably all at the same time.  If you come to visit her in Chicago she will probably want to draw your face.

Septenary Artist Profile: J.Shea

We have been exhibiting and showing with J. Shea for a number of years now and continue to be excited by his pieces. If you were able to join us for our Super Button Masher Exhibit this past February, you may have seen his awesome wire pinball piece.

For the Septenary exhibit, he has created a number of new wall hanging wood, wire and found object sculptures. All have an array of tiny, meticulous details and the perfect coat of antiqued lacquer.

Pieces for Septenary are available for viewing and purchase through the OhNo!Doom online gallery: http://shop.ohnodoom.com/collections/septenary

J. Shea was born in Boston,Ma. and is now based in Porltand,Or. Shea
creates mixed media sculptures out of small discarded gadgets and lost
cultural icons, these assembled parts are fused together with hand
sculpted figures and animals forms carved out of clay and wood
modeling mediums, imbuing them with a sense of adaptability,
transience and animism as they are pulled out of context, repurposed
and re-contextualized.
